Mentoring, counselling or spiritual guidance: which do I need?

Each kind of support does something different. Knowing the difference helps you ask for the right help sooner.

People often contact us saying, “I don't know what I need, I just know something has to change.” That is a good place to start. Here is a plain guide to the kinds of support we offer and when each one fits.

Counselling: when you are carrying something heavy

Counselling is a confidential space to talk about how you feel and what you are going through: stress, low mood, anxiety, grief, family pressure, identity. The focus is your emotional wellbeing. It suits you if you feel overwhelmed, stuck in the same thoughts, or unsure how to cope.

Mentoring: when you are ready to build

Mentoring is forward-looking and structured. You set goals, take on weekly commitments and are held accountable. Our mentoring works across mind, body and soul. It suits you if you are broadly stable but want discipline, direction and steady growth.

Mentoring is not therapy. If something comes up that needs professional support, a good mentor will say so and help you find it.

Spiritual guidance: when the distance is with Allah

Spiritual guidance focuses on faith and the inner life: salah that has slipped, a heart that feels distant from the Qur'an, questions you have not felt able to voice. It suits you if your main concern is your relationship with Allah. It is not a fatwa service; questions of Islamic law go to qualified scholars.

Marriage counselling and mediation: when it is about the two of you

If the difficulty sits between you and your spouse, or you are preparing for marriage, couples sessions give both of you a balanced place to be heard.

A simple way to decide

  • Feeling overwhelmed or low most days? Start with counselling.
  • Stable, but drifting and wanting structure? Try mentoring.
  • Your main concern is faith and worship? Book spiritual guidance.
  • The difficulty is in your marriage? Book a couples session.
  • Still unsure? Book a 20-minute introductory call and we will help you decide.

When you need more than any of these

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent medical help call NHS 111. Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123. Your GP can also refer you to NHS talking therapies.

Something to do this week

Write down, in one sentence, what you would most like to be different in three months. Bring that sentence to whichever session you choose.
